IRVINE, Calif. — There is more detail on New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Trevor Penning and the injury he will be managing over the coming weeks.
Per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, Penning is again nursing a turf toe injury.
The fourth-year offensive lineman spent much of his rookie season sidelined with a turf toe, or dislocated toe, injury as well. The early estimation is that Penning will miss “a few weeks,” a vague and unspecific timeline.
With two preseason game weeks to go along with an off-week before the Saints’ regular season opener, there’s a chance that the newly-minted left guard could be ready for the team’s Week One home opener against the Arizona Cardinals.
However, it seems just as likely that he could miss at least one game as he recovers.
The silver lining here is that New Orleans is able to manage a large portion of this injury during the preseason. Had this situation occurred during the regular season, Penning would have been guaranteed to miss several games.
Penning was making the switch from tackle to guard this offseason, a role that felt much better suited for his skill set. He’ll now lose a bit of momentum as he is learning his new position. In his place, expect veteran offensive lineman Dillon Radunz to step in.
Radunz struggled during the preseason opener, but he was also lined up out of position at tackle rather than guard where he started 15 games on the right side last season with the Tennessee Titans.
