After a recovery day on Sunday, LSU resumed work Monday morning in the indoor facility.
The team wore shells, and the media was permitted 15 minutes to view.
Harold Perkins was not seen at practice. Whit Weeks, who sat out on Friday, was present but in tennis shoes and no shoulder pads. He watched the team periods from 20 yards behind the action. Weeks was not wearing any sort of precautionary equipment and was walking around without issue. At this point we have to take Brian Kelly’s word that he’s just on a “pitch count”.
O-LINE SHAKE UP
We finally saw some real movement on the offensive line. As the first unit worked without a defense, true freshman Carius Curne played right tackle while Weston Davis worked with the second team. Curne has almost exclusively played left tackle with the second team thus far in fall practice.
Paul Mubenga was the first team left guard, and DJ Chester was the second team center.
In the run-specific period we viewed, Curne and Davis split time at right tackle with the first team. Curne also played right tackle with the second unit which moved Ory Williams to left tackle.
This is a big move. With Curne exclusively working at right tackle on the first and second teams, he’s getting a sincere look as the starter there.
Here’s how the first two offensive line units looked left-to-right:
1st: Tyree Adams-Paul Mubenga-Braelin Moore- Josh Thompson- Carius Curne
2nd: Ory Williams-Bo Bordelon- DJ Chester-Coen Echols-Weston Davis
DEFENSIVE DEPTH
With Perkins and Whit Weeks out, Tylen Singleton and West Weeks manned the middle of the first defense. Jardin Gilbert played the STAR. That means Tamarcus Cooley and AJ Haulcy were the safeties.
I’d be stunned at this point is Haulcy and Cooley didn’t start next week at safety. Dashawn Spears and Javien Toviano have been backing them up, and Gilbert looks to have made the move closer to the line of scrimmage.
One trend I’ve noticed is PJ Woodland grabbing a lot of first team reps opposite Mansoor Delane at cornerback. Ashton Stamps and DJ Pickett have done a lot of work as the second unit.
