NEW ORLEANS, La. – Here’s a shocker. Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the New Orleans Saints have waived third-year quarterback Jake Haener.
He will be subject to waivers, allowing him the chance to head elsewhere. Garafolo’s report appears to stress that he will indeed plan to head elsewhere. Haener has been passed over twice now for opportunities to become a starting quarterback with the Saints. The team also drafted two quarterbacks in the immediate two years following Haener’s selection.
While all of the reasons are there, it did seem that the Saints’ new head coach, Kellen Moore, saw something he liked in Haener.
Despite that, the 2023 fourth-round pick, for whom the Saints traded up, quarterback will now have a chance for a fresh start with another team.
The Saints’ 2023 draft class now has just three selections remaining active on the roster.
- First-round DT Bryan Bressee
- Third-round RB Kendre Miller
- Fifth-round SAF Jordan Howden
It will be up to them to boost the perception of the otherwise depleted draft class just two years into its tenure. That class’s second-round pick, defensive end Isaiah Foskey, was also released ahead of roster cuts.
