NEW ORLEANS, La. – Many teams have tried to replicate the success the New Orleans Saints found with versatile offensive weapon Taysom Hill. Could it be that the Saints will beat everyone to the punch?
That’s a lofty amount of expectation to put on one signing, but the Saints have added another unique talent to their roster who could develop into an impact for multiple positions.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Saints have signed wide receiver and former Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott to the practice squad.
Mellott was among a list of very intriguing players to try out with the team on Monday. He is one of two, along with edge rusher Eku Leota, to sign to the practice squad.

The quarterback turned wide receiver has some incredible stuff on tape. Everything from break away runs to downfield passes and even kick returns. He, like Hill, has been exposed to it all. Mellott was drafted in the sixth-round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders, where he focused at wide receiver but was let go at roster cuts. Now, he lands in the organization that has a unique set of development tracks and plays for a player as multiple as he is.

His pro day results were impressive heading into the draft, but his lack of a defined position and small-school origins ultimately caused him to go late in the draft.
- 5-foot-11, 200 pounds
- 4.39-second 40-yard-dash
- 41-inch vertical leap
- 10-foot-4 broad jump
- 4.20-second short shuttle
- 6.93-second 3-cone drill
- 19 bench reps
Whether or not he blossoms into an all-around playmaker like Hill did as an undrafted talent remains to be seen. Honestly, it’s a longshot that he does. But if there was ever a place that it would work out, New Orleans is that place. Head coach Kellen Moore loves to build around players’ super powers and Mellott has a few to go around.
