There have been a few homecomings for New Orleans Saints free agent additions this offseason. Early in free agency the team signed safety Justin Reid and offensive lineman Will Clapp and traded to acquire defensive tackle Davon Godchaux. All three have roots in Louisiana.
The newest return to the state is wide receiver Trey Palmer, who was picked up off of waivers after roster cuts. Palmer grew up in Kentwood, La., about an hour north of New Orleans. He played college football at LSU and Nebraska, setting the Cornhuskers’ all-time single-season receiving yards (1,043) and receptions (71) records in 2022.
He joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a 2023 sixth-round pick and now couldn’t be happier to be back home.
“I’m happy to be back home,” Palmer said after his first practice with the Saints. “Really, to be out here to put on for my city.”
Palmer grew up cheering for the Saints, more specifically, for Drew Brees. Now he has the opportunity to add his blazing speed to the Saints’ wide receiver depth, a group Palmer has praised highly as he settles into his new surroundings.
“They’re dogs just like me,” he said of the room. “And we just go be brothers and just work at the end of the day. Try to get the championship.”
The wideout’s 4.33 speed matches the emphasis that has been put on fast wide receivers over the offseason. Given his versatility to line up inside, outside, and even in the backfield early in his NFL career, head coach Kellen Moore will surely find creative ways to showcase the former Tiger’s skill set.
When asked how Palmer evaluates his potential impact at wideout, he had one direct answer when he simply said, “You’ll see.”
ONCE AGAIN, HOW Y’ALL FEELING BUCS FANS?! 😱
