NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Saints have filled the roster spot that was left vacant on their active roster following the release of All-Pro special teamer and safety J.T. Gray.
The team announced Tuesday afternoon that it has signed quarterback Jake Haener back to the active roster ahead of its Week 1 bout with the Arizona Cardinals.
The #Saints have moved QB Jake Haener up to the active roster. That fills the void left by the release of S J.T. Gray.

New Orleans waived Haener at roster cuts, but immediately added him back to the practice squad when he cleared waivers. The third-year passer spent a few days on the practice squad before now being brought back up to the active roster.
The move makes sense. The Saints will only be allowed to carry 46 into the game on Sunday as active players, making one of them their emergency third quarterback is a smart move. The Saints already have both starting quarterback Spencer Rattler and rookie passer Tyler Shough on the roster, now they will be able to have their emergency passer in line.
Meanwhile, undrafted rookie quarterback Hunter Dekkers remains on the practice squad. The Saints like what Dekkers has shown during his stints with the team this offseason, allowing him a chance now to develop in the background.
Haener’s elevation also serves as a corresponding move for the team’s three practice squad additions on Monday when only two spots were available.
