METAIRIE, La. – The New Orleans Saints have a new pass rusher on the practice squad, the team announced Thursday afternoon.
Following a calf injury that could sideline defensive end Chase Young for the opening game, the Saints have signed former Nebraska outside linebacker Garrett Nelson. The 25-year-old signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2023.
In order to make room for the move, quarterback Hunter Dekkers was waived from the practice squad.
Nelson also spent time with the UFL’s San Antonio Brahmas as well as the Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos in the NFL.
The 6-foot-3, 224 pound rusher contributed 12 sacks, and 27 tackles for a loss, with 167 in total..
The Nebraska product may not play right away, with rookies Fadil Diggs and Eku Leota likely ahead of him, but with Young’s injury not expected to be long term, depth and options are key.
