Ahead of his first NFL game, New Orleans Saints fourth-round rookie linebacker Danny Stutsman shared his enthusiasm for his upcoming NFL debut in an exclusive interview with LouisianaSports.Net.
During the conversation, the Oklahoma alum highlighted the challenge ahead presented by the Arizona Cardinals, his appreciation for the relationship between the city and team and how he was feeling as this regular season debut nears.
“I’m extremely excited,” he said. “Had some preseason games in the Dome, and obviously that’s a big deal. But it’s going to be a little bit different, that first opening week where we play out with some of the best fans in the country.”
Stutsman understands well the connection between the fanbase and team. He was exposed to the importance of the relationship early upon his arrival to New Orleans.
But beyond acknowledging the community connection, Stutsman knows the challenge ahead with the Arizona Cardinals coming to town.
“(The Cardinals) have some really good players,” he said. “Kyler being an Oklahoma guy, I know how talented he is. They have one of the best tight end rooms in the country. They do a lot of 13 personnel, bigger packages with the guys that they have. Obviously a great running back that’s not easy to tackle so you’ve got to be ready to take them on every play.”
The Oklahoma linebacker has real potential to see his role grow over the course of his rookie contract. With starting linebacker Demario Davis entering his age 36 season, he and other veterans are helping to inspire Stutsman’s growth at an accelerated pace.
“(I’m) just blessed to be in this opportunity, where I got drafted and everything,” Stutsman said. “It’s worked out great. I thank God for that. I have great leaders and role models around me, veterans that aren’t afraid to go out their way. Make a little extra time for the younger players. I think that allows the young guys to grow a lot faster.”
