The excitement around the young potential of the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback situation may have been divided for much of the offseason, but it wasn’t understated by any stretch.
The team is in search of its future franchise passer and Sunday’s Week 2 matchup could be a significant proving ground for Spencer Rattler.
Rattler played well in the team’s opening game even though throwing the ball a career-high 46 times was far from expectation.
In facing the Arizona Cardinals’ defense, which is known for disguising and sending unique pressure packages, Rattler and the Saints’ offense did not encounter the exotic looks that were expected. This week against the San Francisco 49ers, the looks may not be as convoluted or aggressive. However, All-Pro level players like linebacker Fred Warner and defensive end Nick Bosa are sure to present a challenge.
In order to overcome this test, the Saints may need Rattler’s best career performance yet. His 0-7 career start isn’t what he or his team would have liked. But of course, there’s a lot of context (prominent injuries included) that goes into those games. For the Saints, this week alone will present the next opportunity to show improvement.
Rattler threw for 214 passing yards last week with no touchdown passes (though he nearly connected on one late with tight end Juwan Johnson) or interceptions thrown. Rattler only has two career games in which he’s completed better than 60 percent of his passes and has only eclipsed a passer rating of 80 or better three times.
In order to topple the 49ers’ defense, it will likely take the quarterback producing some career highs, including his first multi-touchdown game. Of course, should the run game remain effective for all four quarters, that could take a lot of pressure off of Rattler.
But, at some point, the passing game will have to come through in a big moment.
Yards after catch and separation in the passing game along with protection up front will all be vital as well. It won’t all fall solely on Rattler. But a stellar day could propel New Orleans over a formidable opponent whose injuries have made them vulnerable.
