There’s nothing quite like Saturday night in Death Valley. I got my first taste of it this weekend against Florida, and it was unforgettable. I was going to write a story on that experience but it was intercepted by Blake Baker’s defense.
As amazing as the atmosphere was, plenty of other great SEC matchups played out while LSU was handling business. Here’s a look at what you might have missed.
Texas A&M’s wild 41-40 win over Notre Dame
The Aggies went on the road to South Bend on Saturday and had one of the wildest finishes of the Week 3 slate. The Aggies punched in a score with 13 seconds remaining to grab a one-point lead and secure the win on the road, heading back to College Station victorious.
How they got there was the story, though. Texas A&M trailed by double digits several times in the first half and later faced a 40-34 deficit with less than three minutes left on the clock. That was thanks in part to a Jeremiyah Love touchdown, but especially in part to a mishandled snap on the extra point.
Shane Beamer went crazy at officials…
Star QB LaNorris Sellers left the game after taking a hit to the head.
Play resumed with the backup QB.
And then play was finally stopped to check for targeting- in the middle of potentially a huge South Carolina play. 🏈🦓 #CFB pic.twitter.com/ocaRDQ2PVd

The culprit also had SEC ties: former Alabama quarterback Tyler Buchner. His mishandled snap not only helped A&M cover the 6.5-point spread but sealed their one-point win, the Aggies’ first road victory over a ranked opponent in 11 years.

Vanderbilt destroyed South Carolina
The game between former SEC East basement dwellers did not live up to the hype, but it will have a pretty big impact on the rest of the season.
In the second quarter, Vanderbilt knocked out LaNorris Sellers with a concussion in a 14-7 game. That served as the knockout punch for this game, but the ref couldn’t call the fight for another two quarters.
Vanderbilt did whatever they wanted against South Carolina on Saturday night. They bullied them on the lines of scrimmage, they converted a 3rd and 21, they hit a 51 yard field goal and, most importantly, mentally broke them before it was even halftime.
South Carolina had a full on breakdown as a team and staff, as Vanderbilt broke a 16 year streak with a 31-7 win.

Oh Arkansas, not again
Arkansas went to Oxford and got themselves into a barn burner against Lane Kiffin and a backup quarterback. The Hogs covered the spread, but once again fell to Lane Kiffin in what has become one of the drunkest annual SEC games we get to see every fall.
Ole Miss won 41-35, and came out swinging from the opening whistle. Arkansas and Ole Miss combined for 59 points and 634 yards of offense, and that was just in the first half.
The Hogs’ offense was brilliant for most of the night, as was star quarterback Taylen Green, who finished with 420 yards and two touchdowns. Per usual, though, there was some achilles heel that this Arkansas team would find. This time it was special teams as they missed two field goals and ultimately lost by six points.
Overall. I just feel like I’m stuck in purgatory. Stuck in an endless loop of being close and being good enough to win but not winning. Just sick of it. It’s incredible how this happens. Over…and over…and over…again.
It’s just sad and exhausting.
