Garrett Nussmeier is not fully healthy.
Head coach Brian Kelly addressed reporters Monday and suggested the senior quarterback is being bothered by an injury.
“I’ll be honest, and I wasn’t going to get into this with you guys, but I will, he’s been slowed a little bit with a torso injury,” Kelly said. “He’s fighting through it, and he’s getting better. And he’s not going to be able to really shut it down until we get to the bye week.”
Nussmeier did not throw the ball in two of the final preseason practices that the media was allowed to watch including the Saturday before the opener at Clemson. Kelly initially suggested that decision was a simple “pitch count” to keep Nussmeier’s arm fresh for the fall.
Last season, Nussmeier averaged 311 yards per game through the air. That number is just 229 yards per game through three contests.
This year he has thrown the ball under 10 yards 67 times with only 13 attempts of over 20 yards. LSU’s passing game has not been nearly as explosive, and the point production has been diminished as well.
LSU plays Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night and then travels to Ole Miss the following weekend before the open date on October 4.
