We are a quarter of a way through the season, and there was major movement in the rankings this week. Let’s get right to it.
Reminder, the rankings are solely based on on-field performance through two games this season. It’s not a projection, it’s not based on overall talent, and it absolutely has nothing to do with last season.
16. Whoever for Kentucky
15. DJ Lagway
14. Arch Manning
13. LaNorris Sellers
12. Jackson Arnold
11. Blake Shapen
Tier 2 QB 1s
- Whoever for Ole Miss
Trinidad Chambliss came in to start against Arkansas for an injured Austin Simmons. All he did was go 21-of-29 for 415 yards of offense and three touchdowns. More importantly, he didn’t have a single turnover, which is something Simmons struggled with in his first two games.
- Marcel Reed, Texas A&M
I feel bad for dropping Reed after a 397 yard performance in a massive road win against Notre Dame. But that 45.9 percent completion percentage was concerning since this was the first good defense he’s faced. Regardless, Reed has been awesome so far this season and has quickly become the most improved player at the position in the SEC.
- Garrett Nussmeier, LSU
There are not seven quarterbacks in the SEC that I would take over Nussmeier. But, this offense has to be better and more explosive at some point to warrant the ranking. Also that interception was brutal against Florida.
- Ty Simpson, Alabama
Simpson has five incompletions in the last two weeks. Simpson leads the SEC in Passer Rating and is one of only three quarterbacks in the league who has yet to throw an interception this season.
- Joey Aguilar, Tennessee
I owe this kid an apology. Aguilar has been tremendous. Absolutely tremendous. The two interceptions sucked for sure, but my goodness, do the Vols have themselves a quarterback. Throwing for 371 yards and four touchdowns on a Kirby Smart defense is unreal. Bravo.
The Top 5
- Gunner Stockton, Georgia
The SEC Offensive Player of the Week jumps up seven spots after Kirby Smart finally let the leash off this kid. What a game from the first year starter in Knoxville. Stockton put up 342 yards of offense and delivered heroic moment after heroic moment to secure Georgia’s ninth straight win over Tennessee. None bigger than the fourth down play to London Humphrys that will go down in Georgia lore forever.
- Beau Pribula, Missouri
Pribula leads the SEC in completion percentage at 76.4 percent. He’s been awesome in Columbia so far this season. Sure, the competition hasn’t been the stiffest, but that doesn’t take away from how incredible of a pick up Pribula has been for Eli Drinkwitz.
- John Mateer, Oklahoma
Another game, another 300 yard performance from the biggest impact transfer of the early season in the conference. Mateer has been a total game changer. However, this is his third straight game with an interception, and for that he moves down one spot to No. 3 this week.
- Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt
All this kid does is win. On the field and off. Pavia went into Williams-Brice Stadium and did exactly what he told everyone he was going to do this past summer. Pavia beat another Top 10 team, and has the Commodores at 3-0. He’s also completing over 73 percent of his passes, and may have just parlayed that win into a date with Tate McRae. Good for you Diego.
- Taylen Green, Arkansas
Green did nothing to lose the top spot in the rankings with his performance in Oxford last weekend. Green finished with 420 yards and two touchdowns. He still leads the SEC in touchdowns with 12 and total offense with 391 yards per game. He also leads the league in yards per play at 9.46 and seems to have finally cut down on his turnovers.
