In order for the New Orleans Saints to compete against one of the NFL’s best teams, the Buffalo Bills, ball control, pressure and explosive plays will be key.
For the Saints’ finding an effective run game must be paired with slowing Buffalo’s. Meanwhile, connecting on big plays will be necessary in order to keep pace with the Bill’s high-octane potential.
These three matchups will be important to watch throughout the contest.
Alvin Kamara vs. the Bills’ front
Kamara is running well through the first three weeks of the season, averaging 62 rushing yards per game, on pace for over 1,000. The running back has faced the most light boxes in the NFL, but drawing more defenders into the Bill’s front may need to be the goal this week.
Kamara will have to get out to a hot start against the league’s last-ranked rushing defense. After that, the passing offense can start to open up. Kamara will be the key to not just an effective rushing attack, but an available pass offense.
Chris Olave vs. Tre’Davious White
Olave will match up with several defensive backs throughout this game, but his matchup with the Bills’ veteran defender may be the most important. Olave is the most targeted Saints’ receiver on third downs. If the Saints want to extend drives and attempt to control the clock, staying on the field will be key.
Additionally, if the offense takes shots downfield, Olave’s speed will be a go-to factor against a less-athletic secondary. The Saints have taken six shots downfield on 25 or more air yards, completing just one this season. Receiver Rashid Shaheed will be a threat in that category, as well.
The Trenches
This is true for any and all games, but particularly for the Saints as they take on the Bills at Highmark Stadium.
The Saints’ offensive line is at full strength for the first time this season with left guard Trevor Penning making his 2025 debut and right tackle Taliese Fuaga returning to the lineup. They will be key in protecting quarterback Spencer Rattler and also paving the way for Kamara.
On the flip side, the Saints’ defensive trenches will need to perform well in order for the team to limit running back James Cook. The league second-leading rusher is an incredible talent and a very productive zone rusher with great vision and decision-making skills. All of which make him a tough challenge for the Saints’ defense and its discipline in the run game.
