The connection between a head coach and quarterback is one of the most important bonds in the NFL. The New Orleans Saints are in the budding days of that strong foundation with first-year head coach Kellen Moore and his selected starting quarterback Spencer Rattler.
While rookie Tyler Shough continues to prepare for his opportunity, Kellen Moore and Spencer Rattler just notched their first win together, and the offense is starting to find its rhythm.
Moore called up the season’s biggest play so far, and one of the longest in years for the franchise when Rattler found wide receiver Rashid Shaheed for an 87-yard touchdown pass in Week 5.

From the moment that Moore took the reins in New Orleans, there has been a stark shift in vibes and culture, something Rattler highlighted when asked about his head coach during an exclusive interview on 104.5 ESPN Baton Rouge’s Off the Bench with Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn.
“It’s been awesome,” Rattler said when asked about playing for Moore. “Ever since he got here, I think the culture he brought in, how he goes about his business, how he treats us, all that stuff, he’s a players’ coach for sure. Happy for him to get his first win. He’s a great dude, obviously a great play caller and can bring a locker room together.”
The pair’s first win as head coach and starting quarterback came last week with a 26-14 victory over the New York Giants. Rattler now hopes those wins, much like the five takeaways the Saints’ defense registered last week, will be contagious.
“It’s great to get a win under your belt,” Rattler said.”Took longer than expected, but tough to come across them. You’re happy to get one down and you just want to keep stacking. I think the vibes are high. We want to keep this thing rolling and continue to get better each week and come out with more wins.”
As Rattler and Moore continue their work together, ideally for them adding more of the wins they are chasing, frequent big plays and consistent execution can be expected. The work is just beginning for the duo. Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL, but there’s a clear mutual respect and shared drive to keep improving while the opportunity lasts.
The duo will have a chance at their second career wins in their current roles this weekend as the New England Patriots come to the Big Easy for Sunday, Noon CT kickoff.
