I knew it was a mistake to put Texas at No. 16 last week in the rankings, but I just couldn’t help myself. Oh well. They beat last week’s No. 1 team Oklahoma handily on Saturday, and that was just the beginning of the shake up we saw in the power rankings.
We are halfway through the season, and one thing I have noticed is that no matter what I say in this article, 78.48 percent of fans are going to be mad anyways. Also, I spent the first seven weeks of the season ranking the teams based on on-field performance only and not ranking them by who I think would beat whom from one through 16. Might as well switch that up too.
Let’s get to it.
The Sad Six
16. Kentucky
15. Auburn after a bad call
14. Arkansas
13. South Carolina
12. Mississippi State
11. Florida
Tier Two
- Oklahoma
What do we do with Oklahoma? With a healthy John Mateer, they are great. However, without him, they looked inept against a good defense on Saturday. That’s not good news with Alabama and LSU still on the schedule. It might not be good news for a road game against South Carolina this weekend if we are being honest.
- Texas
That was a huge win on Saturday against Oklahoma. The Texas defense dominated Oklahoma and forced John Mateer into three turnovers. They get a little reprieve to gain more confidence and momentum this weekend with a road trip to Lexington to play Kentucky.

- Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt is coming off a bye week and hosting LSU this Saturday.
- LSU
There are still a ton of flaws with this team, but the South Carolina game was a huge step forward. The offense put up 420 yards and 254 of that were through the air. Both of those numbers may not sound like a lot, but they were both highs for the Tigers in any power four game this season.

- Tennessee
Tennessee improved to 5-1 with their win at home against Arkansas. It was a close win with a final of 34-31, and it was tied 17-17 at halftime. However, Tennessee had pulled away pretty comfortably in the third quarter and held a three score lead going into the fourth. This weekend will tell a lot as the Vols go on the road and try to get their third win in four years against Alabama.
The Top Five
- Missouri
Missouri finished their game against Alabama 1-of-10 on third down, and their star running back Ahmad Hardy was held to just 52 yards on 12 carries. Missouri also only held the ball for 21 minutes in the game. Oh, and they lost the turnover battle with multiple interceptions.
They still lost by three and had the ball with a chance to win it in the final minute of the game. If you’re confused as to what I’m doing by saying all this – I’m making excuses. I still think MIssouri is a top five team in the SEC, and that game could’ve gone very differently on Saturday.
Yes, #Mizzou lost, but the atmosphere at Faurot was incredible against #Alabama
Here’s what a top-15 game in #CollegeFootball is supposed to feel like. This Zion Young strip sack out of half had one of the loudest reactions I’ve ever heard.

- Georgia
I don’t know if this one is deserved, but I will always give Kirby Smart the benefit of the doubt when ranking this team. Not as much of a benefit of the doubt that officials will give him when “not calling a timeout,” but a benefit of the doubt nonetheless.
Georgia has been flying pretty close to the sun this season with close wins against Tennessee and Auburn. This past Saturday they were held to just 20 yards of offense for the first 28 minutes of the game. Luckily, the fumble on the goal line from Jackson Arnold brought them back to life.

- Ole Miss
Apparently Tobago Chambliss showed up to play quarterback for the Rebels on Saturday in their three point win against Washington State.
Get it? Because their quarterback is named Trinidad. And Trinidad has been one of the best quarterbacks in the country this season. However, on Saturday he wasn’t good.
So, it’s like a play on words because Tobago Chambliss would insinuate like an alter ego that isn’t as good.
Do you get it? Ok, sorry. I’ll stop.

- Alabama
Alabama became just the fifth in SEC history to win three straight games against ranked SEC opponents in consecutive weeks. Their reward? Playing the No. 11 ranked Tennessee Volunteers to follow it up.
Alabama was in complete control of the Missouri game for most of the first half on Saturday, and then in an instant they lost all the momentum. They were able to complete three crucial fourth downs and get their fifth straight win, but will need to clean things up if they want to beat the Vols this Saturday.
Alabama’s Ty Simpson is so good pre-snap and so accurate. Makes him one of the most efficient QBs in the country. Continues to look like a clear top 4 QB in the NFL draft pic.twitter.com/rrAzcvyJ0l

- Texas A&M
The Aggies continue to surprise everyone, as they advance to 6-0 on the season with a big win at home against Florida. Marcel Reed had another Marcel Reed game with multiple touchdowns and 270 yards of offense against the Gators. The defense has been the real story over the last few weeks though. The Aggies have held opponents to just 2-of-32 on third down in their last three games combined.
Now comes the fun part when they leave home for the next calendar month.
