SEC QB Rankings Week 7: Who’s leading the pack?

We’re officially at the halfway point of the season, and inconsistency from some of the conference’s top quarterbacks has once again shaken up the rankings.

Here are the Week 7 SEC quarterback rankings.

The Sad Six

16. Cutter Boley, Kentucky
15. Jackson Arnold, Auburn
14. LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina
13. Blake Shapen, Mississippi State
12. Arch Manning, Texas
11. DJ Lagway, Florida

The Top Ten

  1. John Mateer, Oklahoma

Three interceptions when the lights shine the brightest is not good for a team that still hasn’t played a true road game.

  1. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU

LSU had their highest passing yardage of the season against a Power Four opponent on Saturday. More importantly, the arm strength looks close to being back to normal.

  1. Beau Pribula, Missouri

Dropping five spots feels harsh, but Pribula was off on Saturday against Alabama. He missed multiple open receivers that could have changed the outcome of the game.

  1. Gunner Stockton, Georgia

Stockton plays quarterback like someone hitting a six-iron approach shot that never gets more than a foot off the ground, skips off the cart path, and somehow ends up twelve feet from the pin.

  1. Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt

Pavia leads Vanderbilt against LSU this week, but was on a bye this past Saturday.

  1. Taylen Green, Arkansas

I was hoping Taylen Green had turned the corner on being turnover prone. However, after three years as a starter at the FBS level and two in the SEC, I think this is the final product.

Green’s 89.9 QBR ranks No. 1 in the SEC and No. 2 nationally. He’s also averaging 359.7 yards of offense per game, which is not only the best in the SEC, but it’s the best by nearly 40 yards per game.

  1. Joey Aguilar, Tennessee

Tennessee fans crucified me on social media last week when I had Aguilar outside the top five during a bye week. Naturally, I knew what was on the horizon, as everyone should have – a horrid Arkansas defense.

Aguilar was great against the Hogs. He completed 64% of his passes and put up 280 yards of offense. Aguilar is second in the SEC in passing yards per game (280.0), and leads the conference in yards per play at 8.64. The most important number that Aguilar had in the box score this weekend was a zero, as in zero turnovers for the first time in the last four weeks.

  1. Marcel Reed, Texas A&M

Reed’s completion percentage still ranks near the bottom of the SEC, but the number in the win column is far more important. He’s seventh in the SEC in passer rating (152.21), fifth in yards per attempt (8.8), and sixth in offensive yards per game at 279.3. Add on the 15-to-four touchdown to interception ratio, and he belongs here.

  1. Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss

Chambliss had an underwhelming performance against Washington State. However, he still finished 20-of-29 with 268 yards of offense and three touchdowns and no interceptions. He did have a fumble lost, but Chambliss was his usual impressive self despite a very unimpressive win by Ole Miss.

  1. Ty Simpson, Alabama

Simpson hit a rough stretch late in the second and early in the third quarter, some of his worst football in weeks, but when Alabama needed him most, he delivered. The Tide went a perfect 3-for-3 on fourth down, and Simpson was the reason why.

Simpson leads the SEC in passer rating (172.36) and touchdowns, with 16 passing and 18 total on the season. He’s also completing over 70% of his passes and has just one interception on the season. He’s been outstanding, and deserves the recognition he’s getting as the second best odds for the Heisman Trophy this December.
