NEW ORLEANS, La. – Well that one wasn’t expected, but perhaps it should have been all along. The New Orleans Saints have agreed to trade away another starter after sending wide receiver Rashid Shaheed to the Seattle Seahawks ahead of the NFL Trade Deadline.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Saints are trading starting left guard Trevor Penning to the Los Angeles Chargers.
In return, the Saints are expected to receive a 6th round pick in the 2027 draft, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill.

Both of the moves New Orleans managed to pull off ahead of the trade deadline were centered around starters in the final years of their contracts. Both Shaheed and Penning were set to hit the market after the 2025 season.
This now puts them in position to maximize trade value more immediately than waiting to see if a compensatory selection would be awarded, that could have ultimately been canceled out pending other additions.
Penning was drafted by the Saints in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft and has started games for the team at left tackle, right tackle and embraced his newest position at left guard this year. New Orleans is likely to now turn to 2021 second-rounder Dillon Radunz in his place.
There was chatter surrounding fellow guard Cesar Ruiz, as the deadline approached. However, Penning’s expiring deal may have made him a more desirable trade piece for a team like the Chargers who are managing injury and availability along the line and will also be looking to revamp some of its talent along the unit this offseason. Penning now gets an early run at being a part of the Chargers’ future protection unit.
