All five of the teams ranked from No. 21 to No. 25 weren’t ranked a week ago. So, there were a ton of new faces in this week’s rankings including a few that impacted the playoff field the most. Tulane became the highest ranked Group of Six school and claimed the No. 12 seed.
Georgia moved into the No. 4 spot, pushing Alabama down to No. 10 after its two-point loss to Oklahoma. The SEC still projects to land five teams, but Vanderbilt and Texas appear capped even if they win out.
From an SEC standpoint, it will be interesting to see how much the SEC Championship will shake up the order of the teams. The data point of reaching a conference title game will work in favor of those teams, meaning the SEC Championship loser won’t be punished by slipping out of the 12-team playoff field.
