SEC Power Rankings: It’s the final countdown

This might be the fastest a season has ever gone by in my 39 years of watching college football. It’s been crazy, chaotic, and absolutely devastating for head coach’s employment statuses. Before the postseason begins, it’s time for rivalry week. But first, a friendly reminder that the Egg Bowl belongs on Thanksgiving, marshmallows don’t belong on sweet potato casserole, and pumpkin pie is disgusting. Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!

The Sad Six

16. Arkansas
15. Florida
14. South Carolina
13. Mississippi State
12. LSU
11. Kentucky

The Top Ten

  1. Auburn

Auburn took the less conventional route in their 41 point win against FCS Mercer. The Tigers started freshman Deuce Knight to preserve Ashton Daniels’ redshirt. It worked. Knight put up over 400 yards of offense and six touchdowns. Now, that 5-6 team that lost to Kentucky a few weeks ago is just a four point underdog against No. 10 Alabama.

  1. Missouri

Beau Pribula provided a spark to the offense in the first several drives after returning to his first game since he suffered a lower leg injury against Vanderbilt. Oklahoma’s defense and special teams were too much, though, as they blocked a field goal and held Ahmad Hardy to less than 60 yards on 17 carries a week after his career high 300 yard game.

  1. Texas

Texas fans sprinted to Twitter to beat their chest about being a playoff team after their win over 2-9 Arkansas on Saturday. Arch Manning looked great, and Texas put up 52 points and has now scored 30+ points in their last four games. The issue? The defense has allowed 31+ in each of those four games.

  1. Tennessee

It was a dominant win in Gainesville to secure the Vols first win in The Swamp since 2003. Tennessee was just a four point favorite coming into the game but managed to score four touchdowns on their first four drives against the Gators. The 31-0 lead at halftime was the largest margin that Florida has trailed by in a game in the last decade.

  1. Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt continues to make a push for Diego Pavia to make it to New York. Vanderbilt destroyed Kentucky on Saturday 45-17 behind their 11th year senior quarterback’s six touchdowns and 500 yards of offense. Now comes a showdown with Tennessee, and if Vanderbilt can win on the road and get to 10-2, they may punch a ticket to the College Football Playoff.

  1. Alabama

Alabama took a break after playing five ranked opponents in seven games by playing 1-9 Eastern Illinois from the FCS. The Crimson Tide routed them, but the concern continues to be the turnovers. Alabama led the SEC in turnover margin ahead of the South Carolina game and had lost just three all season. They have now lost two more in three of their last four games and are headed to Jordan-Hare to play an Auburn team that is +11 in turnover margin on the season, which leads the SEC.

  1. Oklahoma

Oklahoma is proving that even in 2025, defense can still win championships, or at least compete for them. The Sooners rank 72nd in scoring offense and 94th in yards per game. Saturday against Missouri was the second game in a row that they were held under 300 yards of offense, outgained by their opponent, and still came out with a win over a ranked team. This week they host LSU. With a win over the Tigers, they will improve to 10-2 and are almost a lock to make the College Football Playoff.

  1. Ole Miss

Ole Miss was on a bye. The drama with their head coach was not.

  1. Texas A&M

Texas A&M destroyed Samford, and the Aggies have now beaten five teams this season with a fired head coach. They are 11-0 on the year, and will head to Austin to play arch-rival Texas in a game that could send them to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game for the first time in program history. A win would also drop Texas to 8-4 and send the Longhorns into postseason obscurity. They’re a 2.5 point road favorite for Friday night’s game.

  1. Georgia

Georgia hammered Charlotte on Saturday 35-3. The Bulldogs improved to 10-1 despite Kirby Smart’s record against the spread moving to 0-15 when favored by 39 or more points. Georgia got the ground game going early as Nate Frazier scored twice on Georgia’s first two possessions. Georgia seems to be peaking at the right time, and all the signs of their championship teams of the past are starting to show once again: great defense, physical offense, and yet another player arrested for a driving incident.
