Brian Kelly’s legal back-and-forth with LSU continues.
ESPN reported that Kelly’s legal team informed LSU via letter on November 18 that the confusion regarding his official termination has made it “nearly impossible” for the former coach to find a new job.
Kelly’s contract at LSU deems that he “must exercise due diligence and good faith in seeking qualifying employment.” Currently there are nine power conference job openings. Should Kelly find a job, his salary at his new employer would offset LSU’s buyout obligation.
Former Athletic Director Scott Woodward relieved Kelly of his duties as head coach on October 26, but LSU contends Woodward acted without the authority as he did not have the required approval of the Board of Supervisors to fire the coach. Last week at a Board meeting, permission was granted for new System President Wade Rousse to formally terminate Kelly’s contract.
Should LSU fire Kelly without cause, the school would owe the former coach $54 million.
