LSU has agreed to pay Brian Kelly’s full buyout.
According to Ross Dellenger’s report at Yahoo!, Kelly has received formal termination papers “without cause” which means the school owes him $54 million. LSU has agreed to pay the amount over six years with the understanding that Kelly will seek employment.
The language in Kelly’s contract requires that in the event of termination without cause Kelly “must exercise due diligence and good faith in seeking qualifying employment.” His new compensation would offset LSU’s obligation financially. That language creates some ambiguity, so LSU’s letter, according to Dellenger, requires written documentation of his job search.
Kelly’s attorneys sent a letter to LSU last week that stated the controversy surrounding his termination was hindering his ability to get a job.
