After talk about Brian Kelly’s buyout dominated early November, LSU’s new coach carries a hefty one, as well.
The Advocate’s Willson Alexander reported the terms of Lane Kiffin’s new deal.
Kiffin’s contract spans seven years and totals $91 million in salary, a $13 million annual commitment. A national championship could make him the highest paid coach in the country due to an escalator. Should LSU fire Kiffin without cause, the coach would be entitled to 80 percent of his remaining salary with no mitigation clause in place.
Kelly’s buyout was set at 90 percent of the remainder of the contract which did have mitigation language in it. LSU agreed to pay Kelly the $53 million he is owed but is requiring that he seek employment per the terms of his deal.
In Alexander’s reporting, he revealed that LSU will pay Kiffin’s postseason bonuses for this current Ole Miss team. If the Rebels go on to win a national title, Kiffin would get $1 million.
An official contract will not be approved until the Board of Supervisors meets. According to the Board’s website, its next meeting is December 11 in Baton Rouge.
