A top priority for Lane Kiffin in the upcoming transfer portal cycle will be finding a starting quarterback for his debut season at LSU. He might not have to look outside of the SEC to find one.
LSU has made contact with representatives for former Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, LouisianaSports.net has learned. A source made it clear that Lane Kiffin was not ready to accept a commitment until he knew what options are available once the portal window opens.
Lagway signed with Florida as a consensus five-star prospect out of Willis, Texas. He played in 12 games each of the past two seasons, accounting for 28 passing touchdowns and 23 interceptions. The 6-foot-3, 247 pounder was limited by numerous injuries during his time in Gainesville. He missed spring practice with a shoulder injury and much of fall camp prior to this season with a calf injury.
Kiffin retweeted a post on X announcing Lagway’s decision to enter the portal.

In addition to Lagway, LSU will have plenty of options. Multiple reports have suggested mutual interest between LSU and former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt.
Current Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is seeking a waiver for an extra year of eligibility. If granted, Chambliss could choose to play his final season elsewhere.
When asked about that possibility, Chambliss told reporters, “I’d have to consider what the best situation is for me, what I feel most comfortable with. Who I trust the most. Just get a feel for every possibility really. There’s a lot that goes into that.”
Ole Miss quarterback Austin Simmons began the season as the starter but lost his job to Chambliss when he was injured early in the season. Simmons’s father David Simmons recently said on The Nevin Shapiro Show that he would be open to his son joining Kiffin at LSU.
Michael Van Buren is currently the only scholarship quarterback on LSU’s roster for 2026. Garrett Nussmeier is out of eligibility while Colin Hurley and Ju’Juan Johnson will enter the transfer portal. The Tigers did not sign a quarterback in either the 2025 or 2026 high school class.
