The 2026 NCAA transfer portal opened Friday, Jan 2 and has been open for seven days now.
By the Numbers
The first weekend of the portal ended with nearly 4,000 players entering the portal. That’s 1,300 more players than a year ago. It’s also roughly 31.5% of all scholarship FBS players.
Tide Turning
For the second consecutive day there were more players that signed or committed to SEC teams than entered the transfer portal. Thursday saw 24 players commit or sign and just 14 leave. Arkansas led the way with six players committed or signed The numbers are still very lopsided in terms of players leaving with 200 players more in the portal than signed or committed.
Dominoes Falling for Cam Coleman
There may have been only 14 players that entered the portal on Thursday, but there were some big names that did, specifically at the wide receiver position. Alabama’s Isaiah Horton was a big get in the portal a year ago from Miami and reportedly cost the Tide $700,000. Horton entering the portal was a surprise to many, and some wonder if it’s to help make room for former Auburn WR Cam Coleman who is set to visit this weekend.
Texas lost another wide receiver on Thursday, as well. True freshman WR Jaime Ffrench Jr. entered the portal and became the fourth Texas wide receiver to do so. Ffrench is a former five star who surely had a decent NIL package set up for him out of high school. It’s not that Texas would ever need to free up a lot of funds, but maybe that’s what happened here.
Exodus by SEC Teams
These numbers will fluctuate rapidly, but here are the total players that have entered the portal for each SEC team according to 247Sports as of Thursday, Jan. 8, at 6:00 p.m. CT.
354 players from the SEC have entered the portal, and 154 players have committed and/or signed with SEC teams.
