The wide receiver room is going to have to do one of those ice breaker exercises this week.
Nine transfers and three freshmen enter the fold for the 2026 season. They’ll all get to meet Phillip Wright. He’s the last man standing from 2025.
Lane Kiffin and his staff have assembled a lot of talent in the group, and there’s a nice diversity in skillsets. All of that should create some fierce competition. There are plenty of balls to be caught, but there aren’t enough for 13 guys.
It’s up to the LSU offensive staff to determine who gets to the field.
WHAT WE KNOW
Malik Elzy is a physical presence. He’s 6-foot-2 and all of 215 lbs. That’s what made him a consensus four-star recruit in the 2023 class. Rivals called him the No. 3 player in the state of Illinois as he was coming out of Chicago.
In three seasons at Illinois, production has been sparse for Elzy. He’s totaled 16 catches for 213 yards and two touchdowns.
After four games in 2025, Elzy decided to sit out the rest of the season to preserve his redshirt year. Now, he’s headed to Baton Rouge.
THE FIT
Elzy doesn’t boast the credentials that some of the other wide receiver commitments do. Jayce Brown was a No. 1 target at Kansas State. Tre Wilson was a five-star recruit. Tre Brown averaged almost 20 yards per catch at Old Dominion. Roman Mothershed is 6-foot-5.

Physicality is probably Elzy’s defining characteristic. That’s a great thing to have. Now he’ll have to prove himself.
What may help Elzy is that he was recruited to Illinois by George McDonald who is now his position coach at LSU. McDonald left Illinois for Ole Miss in 2023 as Elzy was arriving.
Now, they’re reunited. Obviously, McDonald sees something he likes in Elzy.
HUNT’S PROJECTION
I could see Elzy carving out a role as a bigger-bodied option in the middle of the field. That said, it feels like he’s got his work cut out for him to garner some playing time.
Injuries limited him at Illinois, but he never really broke through that rotation. He was targeted 29 times in three seasons.
Elzy is talented. The high school recruiting services all agreed on that. So does McDonald. Maybe this is the change of scenery that he’s looking for to unlock it all.
I would have four or five guys definitively ahead of him in the pecking order, but that what spring ball and fall camp are for.
