THE STORY
Two weeks ago, Arkansas let LSU hang around in Fayetteville.
The Hogs made sure that didn’t happen Tuesday night in the Maravich Center.
LSU (14-10, 2-9), once again, had no answer for freshman phenom Darius Acuff and never solved the tremendous Arkansas length in the front court. The Razorbacks pummeled LSU, 91-62, in front of thousands of empty seats.
The game was an indication of where both teams and programs are.
Arkansas is extremely talented and playing some of the best basketball in the SEC. LSU is rudderless and irrelevant as the college basketball calendar heats up.
Arkansas began the game on an 8-0 run and built a 10-point lead after less than five minutes of game time ticked off the clock. Acuff, who dropped 31 on the Tigers at Bud Walton Arena, got wherever he wanted on the floor and scored 14 points with three assists before the break. He finished with 28.
Meanwhile, LSU opened the game 3-for-16 from the floor including a dreadful 0-for-7 start. LSU trailed by 15 at the half, and the second half Hog advantage hovered around 30 the final nine minutes. The zenith was 36 with 3:34 left. Only a 7-0 run in garbage time cut the lead to the final margin of 29.
Arkansas blocked 10 shots and forced LSU into 20 missed layups.
This era of LSU basketball is rapidly coming to a quiet, non-competitive end.
