One of the positions where New Orleans Saints are expected to continue to add talent is in the team’s running back room. That process can begin with free agency, but then see finishing touches during and after the NFL Draft.
Per a source with knowledge of the meeting, the Saints met with North Dakota State University running back Barika Kpeenu during the American Bowl.
Unlike other situations where prospects will often meet with all 32 clubs at all-star games and showcases, I’m told that Kpeenu met with only 12-15 clubs
The 5-foot-10, 213-pound rusher had a breakout season in Fargo, N.D. During the year, he notched 191 carries for 1,005 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. He also added 20 receptions for 247 receiving yards and a touchdown catch.
Kpeenu described his play style in a recent interview with Justin Melo of NFL Draft on SI.
“I’d say I’m more of a North-South runner. I definitely took a more balanced approach this past season though. I made plays to the boundary, as well. I think I have a pretty balanced skill set. I can run with power and speed. I can make defenders miss in space. I’m curious to hear how scouts describe my game throughout this process.”
That sounds like a welcome set of skills either late in day three or potentially as a priority free agent after the draft. New Orleans has often brought in backs in the undrafted ranks, giving them a chance to try to catch on to a practice squad spot or even a roster spot.
With backs Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller, Devin Neal, Audric Estime and Evan Hull all currently set to be in the roster in the 2026 offseason, there is sure to be some competition at the position group throughout camp.
Kpeenu could be a late draft addition or an undrafted addition, but the Saints could look to bring in numerous faces this offseason in new acquisitions, as well.
