Dominance. There’s not a more appropriate word to describe SEC baseball this week.
SEC teams struggled and stumbled out of the gate last weekend after opening day, but after all 16 teams got their feet wet with this week being the first full schedule of midweek games and weekend series, the results were dramatically improved. SEC teams went 64-7 this week and 44-4 on the weekend.
Here are our updated SEC Baseball Power Rankings.
1. LSU
I’m leaving the defending national champs here until they give me reason to do otherwise. The Tigers are 8-0 and off to a historic start offensively in the Jay Johnson era. Their 97 runs, 41 extra base hits, and .633 slugging percentage are second most in the league. All nine in their lineup hit, and they hit for power. They lead the league in batting average (.367) and have already hit 15 home runs. The concern, to an extent, so far is pitching. The Tigers have 4.23 ERA which ranks last in the SEC, and they allowed more runs through seven games than any other season under Jay Johnson.

2. Oklahoma
I, like many, kind of expected Oklahoma’s performance in Arlington last weekend to be somewhat of a fluke and come back down to reality. I fully expected to have them behind Texas after week two especially considering how great Texas has played out of the gates. Oklahoma has done nothing to be moved out of this spot though. They didn’t play any great opponents this week with four games against Coppin State and New Mexico State, but they did manage to score ten runs or more in all four of those games. They’ve now scored ten or more runs in every game this season. In their weekend series against Coppin State, they outscored them 57-1. They belong here still, for now.

3. Texas
Texas fans might not love being ranked behind the Sooners and LSU, but I assure you that’s where they want to be ranked. Texas isn’t necessarily flying under the radar. They’re ranked in the top five in nearly every ranking. Their start to the season has just been way more under the radar than some other teams. That’s primarily because of how dominant they’ve been, especially on the mound. Texas leads the SEC in ERA with a 1.53 as a staff. They’re also the only team in the conference who hasn’t allowed a single home run. This weekend they swept Michigan State while outscoring the Spartans 15-2 and allowing five or fewer hits in each game. They may be the best pitching staff in America.
4. Mississippi State
Last week I penalized Mississippi State for how underwhelming they were on opening weekend. That three game series saw the Bulldog bats hit just .236 which was the lowest in the league. This weekend the bats came alive, and their pitching staff showed exactly how dominant they can be. State scored 58 runs this week in five games and swept Delaware this weekend. Through eight games they’ve struck out 101 batters, the second most in the league.

5. Auburn
Auburn suffered a midweek loss to Cincinnati that was less than stellar. The Tigers lost that game 8-0. They still managed to move up in the rankings though because of their weekend success. They won the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series in Arlington beating Kansas State, Florida State, and Louisville. Auburn’s strength continues to be its pitching staff. They’re not going to mash at the plate like some teams and have just six home runs on the season. Opponents are hitting just .189 against them this season.

6. Arkansas
Arkansas swept Xavier this weekend improving their record to 6-1. I have no doubts that Arkansas is going to win a lot of games this season like they always do. The only concern right now is that they aren’t winning by a lot. Four of their six wins have come by seven combined runs.
7. Texas A&M
The Aggies have been really solid so far. They’re hitting .332 as a team and are top five in the SEC in home runs with 15. The pitching staff has been great too, holding opponents to a .197 average, striking out 73 batters in seven games while walking just five.
8. OIe Miss
It feels like SEC baseball is more fun when Ole Miss is good and Swayze is rocking. Ole Miss went 5-0 this weekend and swept Missouri State in Oxford. They rank in the top three in the SEC in home runs (15) and ERA (2.51).
9. Georgia
Georgia got back to what it does best this weekend – hitting the long ball. The Dawgs fed the trees all weekend and now lead the SEC in home runs with 22 on the season. Their offseason portal additions have been great on the mound, and their 96 combined strikeouts rank third in the league.

10. Tennessee
I will say right off the bat this is too strict on Tennessee. They did lose their weekend series to Kent State which is why they dropped from No. 4 to No. 10, but to their defense Kent State is a really good ball club. Tennessee will still be in contention to make a postseason run. What I am disappointed in is someone catching the damn grill on fire in left field.
