Do midweek games matter in college baseball?
That’s a question I was asked multiple times this week on radio and podcasts. It almost shocked me. All games matter.
They certainly mattered to SEC opponents this week, that’s for sure.
A week after going 64-7 as a conference, the SEC had one of the worst two day stretches in baseball they’ve had in years. The 16 teams in the conference went from losing seven games in a week to losing six games in two days the following week. It started with LSU snapping their 16 game winning streak with a home loss to McNeese State. Then another top six team, Arkansas, lost 12-4 to Arkansas State followed by unranked Arizona State run ruling No. 13 Oklahoma 15-3. To cap off Tuesday night, don’t forget Southern Miss beat Alabama 14-4.

Troy took down Georgia 6-5. Then the coup de grace was the once proud South Carolina Gamecocks getting shoved in a locker by Queens College 9-8 where they trailed the entire game. The other losses around the league felt explainable and excusable. South Carolina was against a team that lost 44 games the year before and was 0-17 all-time against Power Four schools.

This isn’t the end of the world by any means. LSU was run ruled by Northwestern State last season 13-3 in an April midweek game. They went on to win the national championship. They lost to Nicholls and Louisiana-Lafayette in back-to-back weeks in the 2023 national championship season.
Maybe these midweek games don’t matter in the long run. That doesn’t take the bad taste out of your mouth any quicker when they happen before May and June though, and it definitely doesn’t make the black eye on the conference any less noticeable when 12 teams are ranked in the top 25.
Thank God tomorrow is Friday.
