It’s finally here: salary cap shedding season in New Orleans. The Saints have reportedly begun their short journey to getting under the salary cap by pulling their biggest money-saving lever of the year.
Per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, the Saints have restructured the contract of star defensive end Chase Young.
Per Over The Cap, the move could save the Saints up to $10.892 million against their overage, which is expected to hover around $10 million to $15 million this year.
The one move could get the Saints very close to compliance with this year’s $302.1 million limit.
Exactly how much the Saints saved has not yet been reported. It is possible to restructure only a portion of a deal. So while the potential savings could be north of $10 million, there is some possible variance in the move.
Young already has void years through 2030, making the maximum restructure possible without adding more ghost years for accounting purposes.
There will be a slew of these moves upcoming, as the Saints look to not only get under the salary cap enough to clear the requirements, but also loom to spend in free agency.
