LSU finished in last place after 18 SEC games.
The Tigers are the No. 16 seed in the SEC Basketball Tournament which begins Wednesday. In the moments following the triple overtime loss to Texas A&M on Saturday, Matt McMahon was asked why he should be able to return for a fifth season following a 3-15 conference mark in year four.
“For me, I’m 47. This is my 30th season in college basketball,” McMahon said. “I’ve just been incredibly blessed and have absolutely nothing but gratitude and appreciation for this opportunity. With that, the 30 years experience, I also understand what comes with the job from an expectation standpoint. And I share in the disappointment and frustration that we haven’t gotten the results we wanted to this last two months. That’s my responsibility.”
LSU is 6-30 in SEC play over the last two seasons and 17-55 over four years. That’s the worst mark in the league over that span. The Tigers only won one home game in league play this season. Still, McMahon would embrace the opportunity to take another shot next season.
He understands if he’s not given the chance.
“I absolutely love LSU,” McMahon said. “I love our core group that returns next year. I think we have great administration and leadership team here at LSU. So, clearly, I’ll respect whatever decisions they make moving forward.”
