The NFL’s free agent negotiating period begins on Monday.
It’s the portion of free agency that allows players and teams to negotiate deals and agree to terms before contracts can be officially signed on Wednesday. One available player that the Saints have often been tied to is Buffalo Bills offensive lineman David Edwards.
As it turns out, the Saints have a unique in-road to landing the top offensive lineman on the open market.
As noted by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, New Orleans recently added Edwards’ former teammate, Will Clapp, to its coaching staff.
Clapp was hired to be the team’s new offensive assistant following his return to New Orleans as a player in 2025. Clapp and Edwards were teammates in Buffalo during the 2024 season.
Ultimately, every deal comes down to money and opportunity. But the Saints will have an in when it comes to selling Edwards on a vision and deal.
Clapp has held the job for only about two weeks and he’s already a potential difference-maker in courting top-tier free agents.
