The New Orleans Saints appeared unstoppable during the first day of free agency. The team quickly added to its offense and took care of a major need on special teams. Moving ahead, the Saints should be more focused on defense as the open market continues to develop.
With the losses of linebacker Demario Davis and cornerback Alontae Taylor all but certain, the remaining needs lean defensive.
Edge Rusher
The Saints are expected to still be locked in on adding another edge rusher regardless of the resolution of defensive end Cameron Jordan’s future. Through the first day, that pursuit did not result in a signing. A commonly identified target for the team is New England Patriots and former LSU Tigers edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson. Louisiana reunions continue to be a popular method for the Saints. The breakout pass rusher from 2025 would be a worthy consideration as the next.
Linebacker
After the loss of Davis became apparent, it felt likely the Saints would look to add to this group. They have second-year linebacker Danny Stutsman, about whom the team is confident can be a staple in the defense. However, adding more depth and talent to the room makes sense. The team was said to be in on the pursuit of Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd, but he ultimately agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers. Perhaps pursuing a reunion with a versatile player like Atlanta Falcons backer Kaden Elliss could fill multiple needs with one signing.
Cornerback
While the outside corner spots are likely considered locked in with starters Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley, adding more depth to the position will be imperative. The Saints are set to lose Taylor to the Tennessee Titans, making a slot corner a potential pursuit. This could be something the team looks to address in the draft, however, with greater options for the specific “STAR” role than free agency has to offer.
Wide Receiver
Here’s one offensive position the Saints could still look to address. Whether adding competition to the room, more proven potential or going after someone that can take a larger role, there are options. Free agency offers potential such as San Francisco 49ers wideout Juaun Jennings, who has the versatility to excite in head coach Kellen Moore’s offense, Pittsburgh Steelers receiver and return specialist Calvin Austin III and the Saints could even look to trade for an option like Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas Jr. if they really want to make another splash.
Veteran Quarterback
There would be no need to rush here, but with versatile quarterback Taysom Hill’s contract set to void soon, the Saints could be interested in an additional veteran presence in their signal caller room. Not someone that would challenge for the starting job, that belongs to Tyler Shough, but someone to help mentor both him and third-year passer Spencer Rattler along with the experienced former NFL pro coaching staff.
