Exactly 24 hours before the start of the new league year, eyes will quickly turn to a trio of New Orleans Saints.
Defensive end Cameron Jordan, quarterback Taysom Hill and tight end Foster Moreau are all set to see their contracts void with the NFL calendar flipping to the last day of the 2025 league year.
Days change at 4 p.m. ET for the league, with Tuesday marking the next milestone.
Even if the contracts of the three players do void, the Saints would still have the option to re-sign them, but a combined $33.8 million in dead money would also hit the books in the process.
New Orleans is in a good salary cap position now to absorb those hits without much fuss. It’s likely the best path forward, even if the team plans to bring any number of them back.
Linebacker Demario Davis was set to be among this number too, however he has already reportedly agreed to terms to return to the New York Jets, making a return to New Orleans unlikely at the very least. His departure would also leave dead money behind, another amount the Saints are in position to absorb.
The bottom line here is that the Saints are in a healthy enough salary cap situation that they are able to operate in this environment without being hamstrung by the financial ramifications. Even if that means losing some of the players, who may decide to sign elsewhere, there is an overall positive throughline.
