One day after signing their starting punter on the open market, the New Orleans Saints have reportedly agreed to trade their 2025 starter to the AFC.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Saints have traded punter Kai Kroeger to the Houston Texans in exchange for a late-round pick swap in 2028. The move was confirmed by Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.
The Saints will advance their 2028 seventh-round pick to the Texans’ 2028 sixth-round selection.
Getting a pick swap in exchange for a punter for whom you just signed their replacement is a move packed with surprise. It appeared likely that Kroeger would either be held on to in order to have a second punter in practice or would be cut. Finding a deal to be made out of this situation is an impressive feat.
This continues the Saints’ active free agency period and recoups them a sixth-round pick in 2028, which they had originally exchanged for the Dallas Cowboys’ seventh-rounder and offensive lineman Asim Richards last year.
The Saints currently have eight picks in the 2028 NFL Draft including a pair of seventh-round picks acquired from previous trades.
