Texas Athletics

It’s that time of the week again. It’s time for me to ruffle some feathers and make at least one fanbase yell at me for the next two to five business days on Twitter. It’s time for this week’s SEC Baseball Power Rankings.
1. Texas
The Longhorns are the clear cut number one team in the conference. That shouldn’t be a surprise since they won the regular season title a year ago. Unlike a year ago, the Longhorns are winning impressively and doing so against the best teams in the conference away from home.
Texas went to Auburn and was a ninth inning comeback away from a series sweep on the road in a hostile environment. Their pitching continues to steal the headlines, but Aiden Robbins has been incredible for the Longhorns at the plate and their offense is hitting .311 as a team.
2. Auburn
I moved Auburn up three spots this week. That may seem stupid since they lost their series to Texas, but it’s way more of an overcorrection to them being incorrectly ranked in the previous power rankings.
Auburn played the toughest week stretch of anyone in America this week and split their four games between No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Georgia Tech 2-2. That included a thrashing of No. 3 Georgia Tech on Tuesday in their midweek game.
Auburn is a legit national title contender, and their pitching will lead them to Omaha.
AUBURN WALKS IT OFF!!!
Imagine ever thinking they were the 5th best team in the SEC

3. Georgia
Outside of the war we are currently in, I’m not sure anyone is dropping more bombs at such a feverish pace than the Georgia Bulldogs. They lead the NCAA with 80 on the season, and hit 14 this week, including 11 in the Texas A&M Series.
Georgia had a big weekend series win over a ranked Texas A&M team where they put up 22 runs and won their two games by five or more runs a piece. Even with catcher Dan Jackson’s hitting streak coming to an end, the Dawgs have enough juice in their lineup to keep it going one through nine.
4. Oklahoma
Oklahoma is pretty good, guys. It’s like we keep waiting for them to fall off, but it just doesn’t happen. Oklahoma went on the road and got a big series win over the defending national champions. They did that after losing game one where their bats were basically silent after striking out 15 times to Casan Evans.
The Sooners are now 4-2 in the SEC, and off to a much better start than anyone could have anticipated.
5. Mississippi State
Honesty hour: I wanted to put Mississippi State at four instead of five, but ranking them two spots ahead of an Arkansas team that beat them didn’t feel fair.
Mississippi State is coming off a series sweep over Vanderbilt in absolutely dominating fashion, and it feels like nobody outside of Starkville is talking about it. I don’t know if it’s because Vanderbilt is bad, or if it’s because the Bulldogs are so dominant that it wasn’t a surprise.
The truth is always somewhere in the middle, and regardless of the reason why it’s not getting enough attention, it was incredibly impressive. State is leading the SEC in hitting and was +17 in run differential this weekend against the Commodores.

6. Arkansas
I’m going to get reamed for this since Mississippi State lost to Arkansas in a series a week ago, but Arkansas is leaving a series against South Carolina that they absolutely should have lost.
There’s an argument to be made for not punishing a team for winning, but when you escape the worst team in the conference because of an errant throw on a routine groundball, you deserve to drop.
Scobey had plenty of time to make this throw. The throwing errors have been a massive issue for him this year since moving over to shortstop.

7. Ole Miss
That was an incredibly impressive series win this weekend over a top 15 team in Kentucky. The Ole Miss pitching staff continues to be dominant, ranking second in the SEC in strikeouts with 293. They held Kentucky scoreless and to just four hits on Friday night in their 5-0 win, and the bats finally came alive for 12 runs in their series clinching win on Sunday.
8. Tennessee
It flew under the radar, but I thought Tennessee’s series win over Missouri was pretty impressive. They lost the series opener 8-4, but were able to bounce back and win the final two games holding Missouri to just three runs over the final 18 innings.
The perplexing part of this year’s Vols team is the offense not scoring as many runs as we are used to seeing. They’ve scored ten or more runs just six times in 24 games this year. They did that 13 times through their first 24 games a season ago.
9. Kentucky
There’s nothing flashy about Kentucky, but they’re a very good baseball team. The Wildcats lost this weekend’s series to Ole Miss, but they are still very solid. They excel in playing small ball and taking advantage on the base paths, leading the SEC in sacrifice hits (16) and stolen bases (69).
10. Alabama
What a weekend for Alabama. After getting swept at Kentucky, they hosted a top 20 ranked Florida team that was 3-0 in conference play. They left Tuscaloosa 3-3. Alabama put it on the Gators outscoring them 28-11 on the weekend including an emphatic 14-7 win on Sunday.
