There has been a clear emphasis for the New Orleans Saints when it comes to their running back room this offseason. After signing a pair of free agent rushers, speed has clearly been the focus of additions in the room.
From the splash signing of running back Travis Etienne Jr. to the later addition of veteran back Ty Chandler, it’s clear that the Saints are looking for ways to add some explosiveness to the position.
However, that strategy could change going into this year’s NFL Draft.
While there are more home run hitters available in this year’s draft like Penn State’s Nicholas Singleton and Virginia’s J’Mari Taylor, the Saints could consider shifting gears to between-the-tackles rushers instead.
While Etienne brings 4.4-second 40-yard dash speed and Chandler brings blazing 4.38 explosiveness, finding another physical back to compete with Kendre Miller, Devin Neal and Audric Estime could make sense for New Orleans.
Prospects like Nebraska’s Emmett Johnson and Penn State’s Kaytron Allen both fit the mold of physical, downhill runners. Meanwhile, another option like Arkansas’s Mike Washington Jr. brings a blend of both styles.
Much like wide receiver, the Saints are in luck with the running back crop this year. While the position isn’t as deep as wideout, it is eclectic enough to offer options of differing archetypes should they decide to continue to invest in the position.
With Alvin Kamara and Etienne set to lead up the position group for now, how and if the Saints plan to continue adding talent to the group will be intriguing to see ahead of getting back on the field for season prep.
