Mississippi State Baseball on X
By Chris Marler
Just when we thought we knew something, even a little something about this conference, the weekend came and changed everything.
We had eight series in the conference as we do every weekend. That wasn’t unique. What was unique was that seven of those eight series ended in sweep. That means there’s a ton of shakeup in this week’s power rankings and a lot of fanbases who are filled with anger and apathy.
Here are this week’s SEC Baseball Power Rankings.
1. Texas
Back to back top ten series wins for Texas, and this time it was a sweep over Oklahoma at home in Austin. The Longhorns have now won five straight in the SEC and all five were against teams ranked in the top eight nationally at the time of playing them. They rake at the plate and are lights out on the mound. They’re the best team in America right now, and that includes UCLA. That’s all I have to say about that.
2. Mississippi State
I hate when people throw out half-hearted cliche lines about “college football is better when _____ is good.” Usually that is a line that is muttered about Tennessee, and I will always believe that America wins when Vol Twitter loses, but that’s neither here nor there.
College baseball is better when Mississippi State is relevant and good. Period. They are awesome this season. They continue to hit better than anyone else in the conference, and after winning six straight in the conference, they allowed two runs or less in four of those six games.

3. Georgia
It was an underwhelming sweep, but it was a sweep nonetheless. The Bulldogs beat South Carolina in their three game series to get to 7-2 in league play and elbow their way into a three way tie for first with Texas and Mississippi State. What does Georgia do well? Hit bombs. They still lead the nation with 85 of them.
4. Alabama
This won’t last, but they deserve to be here after their past two weekends. I’m not sure what happened in Lexington during the opening weekend of conference play when they were swept by Kentucky. Since then though, they have flipped a switch and are rolling. Alabama swept Florida and Auburn in back-to-back weekends and jumped into the top ten of the latest Baseball America rankings. The scary part is they’re winning all these games, and Justin Lebron hasn’t even been at his best at the plate.

5. Auburn
I’m still a firm believer in Auburn, but my goodness what a tough weekend for a team that seemed destined for Omaha just two weeks ago. The Tigers were swept, but what was most concerning was the way it happened. The Friday night pitching that’s been so good this year resulted in an 11-1 loss in the opener, and the bats never got going all weekend. The Tigers scored four runs in three games and hit .145 with just 12 hits over the series. Seven of those came in one game.
6. Florida
Is Florida back? I don’t know, but that was a helluva series sweep in one of the toughest places to play at Arkansas. This is a really good opportunity for Florida to make some noise and get rolling. They host a wounded Ole Miss team at home this week, and at 6-3 in the conference, they have a chance to really help themselves in the standings.
7. Texas A&M
Texas A&M may be a fraud. They also may be the best team in the conference that nobody is talking about. They swept Missouri this weekend which was expected. They’re just 5-4 on the season in conference play, but 22-5 overall with all five losses coming to top ten teams and three of the five coming to top five teams. The bats looked great this weekend putting up 39 runs over three games.
8. Arkansas
I’m just going to say it. I think Arkansas is the most overrated team in the conference, and maybe the country. They have a ton of talent, and the sky isn’t falling in Fayetteville. Their ceiling though isn’t Omaha, and that is becoming more and more obvious the more they play.
9. Oklahoma
Tough weekend in Austin for the Sooners who were swept in the three games by Texas. Part of me wants to say that there’s no reason to be concerned because two of their losses were only by one run and came in the form of walk-offs. Their four wins in conference play however have come by a combined five runs.
10. LSU
LSU looked terrible on Friday, but they were able to win by two touchdowns on the final two days of the weekend. With Will Wade, Lane Kiffin, and Kim Mulkey all on campus now, Jay Johnson is by far the most docile and likable coach on campus – which made his outburst of four letter words on Sunday at Kentucky’s head coach even funnier. Let’s hope it lights a fire under the team and they finally get it going.
