It may seem counter-intuitive at first, but even though there is uncertainty surrounding the New Orleans Saints when it comes to franchise footholds, a lot of the murkiness appears to be driven by clarity.
The future of Saints players like running back Alvin Kamara, defensive end Cameron Jordan and quarterback Taysom Hill each remain in question. It’s clear that the path forward for each player is just as likely to end in a split as it is likely to end up forging ahead.
The buzz at this year’s Annual Meeting helped to drive those speculations home a bit further.
But what has also been illuminated is that the lack of clarity on those players’ futures appears to be stabilized by a clear direction the Saints intend to traverse. The uncertainty is bred by organizational clarity.
Figuring out the right path forward with Kamara will require forward-thinking, monetary considerations and rising or additional talent that has and could still enter the picture. He is under contract, but keeping it that way may require more work to be done on his agreement.
Jordan’s role in New Orleans remains the biggest possible deciding factor for his return. The Saints want him back, but have to remain vigilant about the agreement and realistic about the opportunity the club can provide him.
Hill’s role in New Orleans saw a significant dip last year. Much like Jordan, should Hill continue to play, evaluating the usage the Saints can provide versus the touches and snaps he could garner elsewhere could become the catalyst for his decision. Again, forcing New Orleans to be steadfast in its identity and the opportunities it can afford.
Whether retaining any of these players or letting them walk is a good or bad decision won’t be known until hindsight comes into play. But the Saints couldn’t put themselves in position to make such tough decisions about franchise figures without having a unified and clear vision of what they need, what they want and who they are.
Though there is uncertainty about the future of some important players, it appears clear that there is at least certainty in the Saints’ direction and vision.
