LSU hit the practice field in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts again on Thursday.
Conditions were warm and sunny, and music was blaring throughout The Ponderosa.
I have some thoughts on the passing game, but we’ll start with some injury notes.
Whit Weeks continues to sit out of spring practice. He met with the media last week and didn’t give a timetable. Trey’Dez Green was in a yellow non-contact jersey on Thursday. He went through some individual drills and looked just fine catching the ball. He even jumped into the 11-on-11 which indicates nothing serious is going on.
RED ZONE PASSING
(Palmer)
The quarterbacks and wide receivers worked on red zone throws for most of the 20 minutes media was allowed in. Overall, the scholarship quarterbacks were very accurate. Sam Leavitt only missed one throw, a stutter-go up the seam that he put a little too much air under.
I charted one drop by Jayce Brown that forced him into some endzone pushups. Tre Wilson also had a drop on an in breaking route.
The end zone route combinations were rubs, slants, long drags in the back of the endzone and some corners.
One thing that struck me is that LSU does have some size at wide receiver. There are a host of speed guys around 5-foot-11, but size is available.
Jackson Harris, who runs with the first team a great deal, is all of 6-foot-2. Tre’ Brown from Old Dominion is listed at 6-foot-4 and looks it. There’s a reason Ohio State and LSU hosted him for portal visits. Roman Mothershed from Troy is 6-foot-5 and made a leaping catch on a fade that was impressive. That doesn’t even include Green at tight end who is the best jump ball player in college football.
My early, early read is that Harris will absolutely be involved. Brown likely will, and Mothershed is out there competing.
Right now, Harris and Jayce Brown feel like the guys taking most of the early reps. I would add Winnie Watkins and Tre’ Brown to that list.
LEAVITT’S LEGS
(Palmer)
Here’s your twice-a-week Leavitt health update. He did keep the ball on some read option drills and jog up the field. Tuesday he was only giving and did not run when the quarterbacks did designed runs. It’s a slow, steady progressions, but I feel like he’s going to be up and running by the summer.
CONFIDENCE AT CORNER
(Palmer)
I was surprised Corey Raymond didn’t take a transfer corner this cycle.
That tells me he’s confident in what he has. DJ Pickett and PJ Woodland run with the ones every time. Ja’Keem Jackson comes in when they go Nickel or Dime. Beyond those three, it’s a very unproven room. I got a good look at true freshman Havon Finney today. He looks like a player who reclassified up a year and then enrolled early. He should be a junior in high school. Aidan Anding is listed at 170 lbs., and Michael Turner Jr. is listed at 162. There isn’t much physical size in that group considering Pickett and Woodland are also slender players.
11-on-11
(Moscona)
- Landen Clark naked boot complete to Durham
- Clark touchdown to Trey’Dez Green. Might have been a sack in real action.
- Jump ball fade incomplete to Jackson Harris
- Durham fumbled and Princewill Umanmielen recovered.
KICKING CURIOSITY
(Moscona)
With Damian Ramos moving on, LSU is replacing its all-time leading scorer.
The options are true freshman Gavin Higgins from Parkview, walk on Sean Perret from Catholic High and Arkansas transfer Scott Starzyk who was the No. 1 kicker in the country out of high school last year. He was the Razorback kicker in 2025 and was 14-for-18 with a pair of 50-plus yarders.
In terms of leg strength, Starzyk was the standout. With his pedigree and experience, he looks the be the favorite at the position.
Grant Chadwick was doing the holding, and Silas Hall was the snapper.
