Phillip Wright has a bunch of new friends.
As spring practice has gotten under way, 11 new wide receivers have joined the Tiger roster. One more will show up this summer. Wright is the only holdover from the 2025 roster. He brings one career catch for two yards.
That’s it.
Lane Kiffin and Billy Glasscock worked to overhaul the wide receiver room with speed and explosive plays as a priority.
“Explosive plays are a very critical factor, always have been as you look at analytics and to winning games and being successful on defense limiting them and having them on offense,” Kiffin said. “It’s not just what you draw up. You’ve got to have the players. To add players that have made a number of explosive plays in the receiver room was important.”
Only Missouri created less 30-plus yard passing plays than LSU among SEC teams a season ago. LSU’s vertical passing game was virtually non-existent. Plenty of factors went into that. The offense line was poor. The quarterback was hurt. The running game never forced numbers into the box.
Kiffin had no such problems in Oxford. The Rebels led the nation in 10, 20 and 30 yard passing plays. Of 136, Ole Miss was the best. That comes from play design, sure, but it also comes with recruiting a certain skillset at wide receiver.
The strategy also requires depth as opposed to simply top end talent.
“We try to balance the room more,” Kiffin said. “If you think of it as here’s your cap number for a room, you know, instead of being really top heavy with one and two and not having depth, I think when we’ve been our best, it’s been when we’ve had four to five to six receivers that can all play really well. That’s what we’re stiving for here, and I think we have a chance to do that with the players that are out there. Then we’re the best for the long run of the seasons and potentially the postseason.”
Jayce Brown averaged 17.1 yards per catch at Kansas State. Jackson Harris led the Mountain West at 19.7 yards per reception. Tre Wilson was a five-star recruit when he signed with Florida thanks to his breakaway speed. Corey Barber earned that same recognition in the 2026 class.
LSU could have unloaded the NIL funds on a single top-end wide receiver like Auburn transfer Cam Coleman. Instead, Kiffin elected to go with depth.
The Tiger offense will look different in almost every was this fall. Wide receiver is no exception.
