It felt like we had complained about it every day for almost a week. Finally the dam broke and we saw a wave of commitments come through for SEC teams.
Here’s the latest on what’s happening in the basketball transfer portal.
By the numbers
Over 60 players found new homes on Wednesday. That’s the most of any single day since the portal was opened. Just 23 players entered the portal, as the entrants have slowed to a snail’s pace totaling 1,133.
The pace of players finding a new home is well behind what we saw in football. That’s probably due to the fact that the football window is parallel to the start of the spring semester for most of the students. Basketball players are finishing up their spring semester and have much more time to figure things out. Still, only 22 percent of players committing to a new school after ten days is shocking.
Is Indiana the new Alabama
This is a question that’s been floating around the football world of college sports ever since Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers have been dominating the landscape of college football upon his hiring two years ago. Now, the question is being asked again, and the latest news from the portal is only making it harder to say that the answer is no.
One of the top ranked players in the portal, Aiden Sherrell announced he was leaving Alabama despite starting every game for them this season and having another year before he was draft eligible. The 6-foot-11 big man is from Michigan, so the natural speculation was that he may go play for Michigan State and Tom Izzo or the defending national champion, Michigan Wolverines.
He did neither.
He became the sixth member of Indiana’s No. 1 ranked transfer portal class and arguably the crown jewel of the entire thing. For those keeping score at home, Indiana has now claimed the No. 1 transfer portal class for football and basketball.

The worst final four
As of Thursday, there are just four remaining SEC teams that don’t have a single player brought in from the portal. Vanderbilt, Auburn, Georgia and LSU are all still sitting with a goose egg next to incoming transfers.
There is no rush to get players signed before the portal closes, and maybe there is less of a rush since only 22 percent of the total players in the portal are committed somewhere. Still, this is not the kind of start you could have anticipated for Will Wade.
The three other teams all have six players or less that have transferred out and have maintained some retention wins for their programs. LSU has six players leaving, and as it stands today, not even half the amount of players they’d need for a starting five next year.
The basketball portal has been open for over a week.
