Garrett Nussmeier’s wait was longer than anticipated.

He landed in Kansas City with the 249th selection in the NFL Draft on Saturday, a seventh rounder. Nine quarterbacks came off the board before the former Tiger signal caller.

Now, he’ll back up Patrick Mahomes and compete with former Saints quarterback Jake Haener for a role with the organization.

Nussmeier leaves LSU as the No. 3 passer in school history and ranking second in attempts and completions. He’s the third 7,000-yard passer in school history and was the second to top 4,000 in a season when he did it in 2024.

Nussmeier’s senior season was hampered by health issues from the start. He dealt with patellar tendinitis in August, and a cyst formed on his spine caused enough pain to force him out of the final four games of the season.

Those maladies appeared to be cleared up in the pre-draft process and allowed him to compete in the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine. Once thought of as a potential first round pick, Nussmeier’s fate eventually settled him in round three.

Still, it’s obvious many teams took Nussmeier off their boards due to the injuries.
