Fans are another month close to football season making its triumphant return. For many, Week 1 of the NFL season is when things get started, but dedicated fans are also awaiting the start of training camp.
Position battles, joint practices and rising stars, camp offers an unparalleled sense of universal optimism and New Orleans Saints fans now have their targeted start date.
Per NOLA.com’s Jeff Duncan, the team is expected to report Tuesday, July 28, and hold its first official training camp practice on Wednesday, July 29.
Camp will be held at the team’s home facility in Metairie, La. and, if last year was any indication, it’s reasonable to expect to see some open practices for fans to attend. This will offer an early glimpse at how some of the major offseason stories have panned out for New Orleans as well as details around the team’s new era and potential.
During camp, the team will also participate in joint practices with all three of its preseason opponents. The Saints will host the Jacksonville Jaguars in Metairie while spending a day each with the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams, per Duncan, out on the West Coast. The California joint practices will be held before the Saints match up with the Rams on Saturday, August 22.
Head coach Kellen Moore is a big believer in the joint practice process and sees it as a benefit to be able to see starting talent take on starting talent in a controlled practice environment. The Saints are doing something NFL teams have rarely done, practice against multiple teams before the season begins and are doing something that no team may have ever done, practicing against all three preseason opponents.
More excitement is right around the corner, as training camp approaches.
