As Organized Team Activities (OTAs) draw to a close this week and mandatory minicamp quickly rounds the corner, the New Orleans Saints will be getting a clearer look at how some positions on their depth chart are setting up.
Teams don’t have to reduce to a 53-man roster until after the final preseason game in August, but we can begin to get a glimpse at how things are looking across the position groups ahead of camp in order to then track changes and adjustments once the summer practices get going.
Position-by-position, we’ll outline the early expectations for each group, beginning with quarterback. This position just has one big question to answer, will they keep two or three on the active roster?
Quarterback Projection – 3
There isn’t much of a reason to rule out any one passer right now. Not based on what’s been seen on the field so far. During the two open sessions, Rattler has looked like the more comfortable passer, but Wilson has a lot of valuable starting experience. There isn’t enough information yet to justify dropping one or the other.
As camp gets started in July, more jostling will happen here. But it’s not outside of the ordinary for New Orleans to keep three active signal callers, especially with a relatively young room.
Where things get interesting is if the team brings back quarterback Hunter Dekkers after he finishes his UFL season. Following the Owners’ Meeting in April, that move sounded like a foregone conclusion.
