Three undrafted standouts from Saints OTAs

With mandatory minicamp on the way, the New Orleans Saints’ offseason is almost wrapped up.

Training camp will arrive in no time and in the process, undrafted free agents will get a chance to shine as they try to realize their NFL dreams. Here are three undrafted free agent (UDFA) rookies that have already started to garner some attention.

EDGE Mike Heldman

Heldman hasn’t had a chance to push the passer often in front of the media with very limited team reps across the roster, but watching him during individual drills provides a glimpse at his get-off capabilities and burst. He’ll be a fun player to track throughout training camp and the preseason when he finally gets a chance to cut it loose.

Wide Receiver Brock Rechsteiner

The wideout immediately grabs attention with his build. He’s a bulky, strong receiver but one that moves fluidly and can leap with the best of them. He’s been in a consistent rotation throughout first, second and third team reps. He’ll continue to get a lot of opportunities moving ahead while rookie wideout Jordyn Tyson continues to recover.

Running Back CJ Donaldson

Donaldson matches the profile of a back like Audric Estime more than a shiftier, elusive one but has some good movement ability that defies expectation. Seeing the way he cuts and bounces from move to move in division drills mimics the limited exposure seen in team run drills. He’s also shown off some reliable hands in the passing game. There’s little mystery that he can hold his own as a pass blocker as well.
