Calling a quarterback the most important player on an NFL team may not be the riskiest call in the sports media world, but for the New Orleans Saints, quarterback Tyler Shough represents more than just the position he plays.
For the first time in five years, the Saints look like legitimate postseason contenders and Shough is a big part of the reason why. The second-round quarterback not only has reinvigorated a franchise and fanbase with his stellar on-field play and infectious personality, but also has helped the Saints build a roster worthy of contention.
Earning the role as a starting quarterback on a second-round rookie deal gives an NFL club a lot of flexibility to build a roster. But those investments will only go as far as Shough’s arm and legs can take them.
This is a very important year for the former 6-foot-5 playmaker. He’s earned a starting job and now he’s on the path to proving whether or not he can be the quarterback of the future. Expectations and belief are both high in the signal caller because of his abilities as both a passer and ball-carrier.
The Saints will go, in 2026, as far as Shough can carry them with the help of another strong defensive performance.
New Orleans invested heavily around the quarterback adding weapons like first-round wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, third-round tight end Oscar Delp and free agent running back Travis Etienne Jr. The team also bolstered its protection unit by signing veteran guard David Edwards and tight end Noah Fant, who is underrated as a blocker while bringing obvious pass-catching ability.
Shough is the Saints’ most important player because he can prove not only his individual success in 2026, but has the ability to completely shape the team’s competitive future and make every signing, draft pick and new addition worthwhile with his play alone.
Of course, that will sound like an unfair amount of responsibility to pile on a single player, but the quarterback position is often overloaded with unreasonable expectations. It wouldn’t be new to Shough to be perceived as the end-all-be-all player for his team’s season. How he handles that pressure is what could make him great in the annals of Saints history.
Is it all on his shoulders? Of course not. But will it feel like it is? Absolutely.
Each new addition and incumbent teammate will also be critical to his success, but Shough’s production and efficiency will have a massive impact on the storytelling around the Saints’ 2026 season.
A successful Shough season is more likely than not to translate to a successful Saints season and that’s why he is the most important player on the team’s roster.
