As contract extension negotiations continue, New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave isn’t expected to miss the early portion of training camp.
With that, the team is in position to have one of its star players present and participating to open up practices and preparations for the 2026 season. While the decision is a positive one for the team, it’s also a meaningful showing of leadership by Olave, who has been embracing a larger leadership role inside of the wide receiver room.
Olave, the veteran of the receiver group all of a sudden, is establishing himself as a team-first player to start camp.
Of course, if negotiations press on for too long or become contentious, there may end up being a change of strategy here. But for now, Olave is in position to show that he’s more concerned with getting ready for the season with his teammates than posturing for negotiation leverage early in the camp process.
New Orleans is in search of its next generation of leadership. With quarterback Tyler Shough stepping into a major leadership role on offense, players like Olave, center Erik McCoy and others now also have the chance to claim their spots among the team’s tone-setters.
A “big team, little me” decision like Olave’s is a strong example as to why he’s being viewed as one of the players that can step forward and be a standard bearer for his group.
With a quartet of rookie wideouts in his position room and no player with more than four years of NFL experience around him, Olave is the elder statesman of his room at just 26 years old.
It remains to be seen if anything changes depending on the cordiality of the negotiations down the line, but for now, the wide receiver’s decision to be available for the opening of training camp is a strong example of his leadership, setting an example for the young players surrounding him.
