After another surprising retirement announcement, the New Orleans Saints’ wide receiver room has new opportunity. Following the retirement of wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk, players across the group now have a chance to earn a roster spot, if they can convince the Saints with their play upcoming.
It’s entirely possible that New Orleans rolls into the season with only five wideouts on the active roster. But in any case, wideouts that were once fighting for consideration can now move up to battling for a spot with the team in 2026.
With Mason Tipton also sidelined, a number of players have moved up the chain. So far, players taking advantage of their opportunityt include former LSU Tiger Trey Palmer and returning pass-catchers Ronnie Bell and Bub Means.
But those won’t be the only players that end up showing out as they look to climb. Veteran Kevin Austin Jr. turned into a go-to target by season’s end last year. He has a chance to reignite that chemistry with starting quarterback Tyler Shough as more opportunities present themselves.
With three drafted rookies in Jordyn Tyson, Bryce Lance and Barion Brown along with incumbent receivers Chris Olave and Devaughn Vele, the Saints may only look to keep five wideouts, but with spots available on the practice squad, competition at the position will continue to heat up.
