The New Orleans Saints know a thing or two about surprise retirements.
The latest comes from the wide receiver position as former second-round draft selection and recent Saints trade acquisition Ja’Lynn Polk has retired from the NFL.
The Saints announced on Sunday afternoon that the third-year wideout was placed on the Reserve/Retired list ending his tenure in New Orleans and the NFL.
The move is an unexpected one as Polk had previously expressed excitement about his opportunity in New Orleans and a desire to prove the Saints right for betting on him by making the move to bring him to the team.
The Saints added Polk ahead of the 2025 season via a trade with the New England Patriots. The trade, which sent a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Patriots in exchange for Polk and a 2028 seventh-rounder, was a low-risk move for the wideout while he was on injured reserve, and therefore unavailable, for the 2025 season.
The goal for New Orleans was to get Polk to their facility, help him rehabilitate from his shoulder injury over the year and offseason, and then give him a chance to land on the roster for 2026.
Nothing was guaranteed around the receiver or his spot in the Big Easy, but Polk was anticipating his opportunity to land a role.
“Obviously, nothing’s promised,” Polk told LouisianaSports.Net back in June. “I’m just going out there doing the best I can, and taking advantage of all the opportunities.”
That’s exactly what he did throughout OTAs and mandatory minicamp, standing out on multiple occasions, before making the decision to step away from NFL four days intro training camp. He had missed the two most recent practices for personal reasons, per head coach Kellen Moore.
The Saints rolled the dice on a talented young wideout, and although things won’t pan out, they didn’t give up a ton of capital to take the shot and have brought in a considerable amount of additional talent at the position via the draft.
Per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, Polk was healthy and comfortable with his role in New Orleans. He simply believed this decision was what was best for him.
